This evening I’m drinking wine… even though I have an alcohol allergy. As I sipped at the red wine I was waiting for side effects, expecting to be suffering within minutes. Nothing happened – I am a happy bunny right now. After about 6 or 7 years of having an intolerance that turned into an allergy I’ve finally had a glass of vino.
Recently I attended Shloer’s brilliant blogger event “crafternoon tea”. It was cakes and posh sandwiches, coffee and crafting with a whole lot of Shloer. Fabulous idea! A lovely dinning room in a posh hotel, and the Makery were teaching us how to make homemade hearts as Christmas tree decorations from ribbons and small bits of fabrics, and buttons and things. I made 2 hearts when I was with Shloer, and now I’m tempted to upcycle old clothing into gifts. Who wouldn’t want a homemade tree decoration made with love by a friend or relative? If only I had a sewing machine, I’d be dangerous!
As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a little unusual. I am allergic to alcohol. I can’t consume it without being ill and large amounts or spirits could kill me. Excuse the image quality. My partner is going to make me a cake, will look and smell like Christmas but won’t hurt me. He can be so sweet sometimes. He has Googled a recipe then bought ingredients, we were going to buy a cake but the labels on shop crimbo cakes aren’t helpful. The non alcoholic wine was “just because”. He said hang on and ran back a few aisles and tried to sneak it into trolley. I know if alcohol is added during cooking I’ll feel ok, if fruit was soaked in booze as is traditional I will be rather unwell. If the booze is a flavouring such as in a cream filling, or in icing I would also be unwell. […]
Let me start by saying I am not adding a bump photo. I have intolerance to strong cheeses and I avoid certain brands I know to cause me an issue. It’s not all cheeses, and I know whats ok and not. Today we went into town center as a family. A spot of window shopping for Crimbo gifts, taking kids into shops and judging reactions. Was going ok, ruled out some gifts for the boys and showed me what they might actually choose. Very handy! Then I said let’s go to Subway for lunch. Wish I hadn’t to be honest. I had what I often have, a tikka sub with spicy cheese. There was no signage saying the cheese had changed. It looked slightly different but I thought nothing else of it until half an hour later. Massive stomach pains and I had difficulty sitting back in the car as […]
According to Australian doctors at Sydney city hospital I am allergic to alcohol. I agree with them, but can often eat things cooked with it, like fruit cakes with brandy soaked fruit, or spagetti bol made with a little red wine. I think its due to the cooking and evaporation. However rum and raisin ice cream gave me the nearly instant hangover effect, and all evening I thought I may vomit. I thought it was only rum Flavouring not actual rum! DOHH if you’re laughing reading this, stop that! Meanies. Note to self, just one more nice thing added to the list I can’t eat or drink.
