Stigma – Do I Look Mental? #MentalPatient 5

Well twitter was a fun place tonight. An awful lot of people are deeply offended, upset, angered or plain livid with ASDA and Tesco. If you missed it I’m sure you’ll read about it soon. It’s not the costume that offends me so much as the name. Mental patient. I’m a mental patient actually, thanks ASDA. Read Nickie’s post on this costume. It has offended me and I am not really buying ASDAs “sorry” tweets. Way to go, fuel stigma and prejudice.   Do I look mental? Is there a uniform my psychotherapist forgot to issue me with? If I was cooking and had a big knife would that be a Halloween worthy look? Can you tell by looking at me I’m nuts? Mental? Medicated?

Uncover The Prehistoric World – Book Review 1

This month my son D has been happily reading “Uncovering the prehistoric world – dinosaurs!” by Parragon books. We are part of Book Buddies, which means we get offered lovely books like this to review. From the second the postie handed this over it has been next to D’s bed. He loves factual books displaying the facts in fun ways. You wouldn’t catch him reading a dictionary, he likes some pictures to help his imagination. I thought I would ask him on film, my apologies for the poor lighting! (The noises are his Dad and Jen cooking in the kitchen.)

Jen Gets Muddy #KidsGrowWild 10

This morning I received a big white box from the postman. It was recorded post too, exciting, I had to open it right away of course. This post is my entry for BritMums’ #KidsGrowWild Challenge”. I took a photo of the lovely gardening kit before the boys got their mitts on it! It had been raining most of the day, but there was a short sunny spell after cycling home from school. Perfect, I asked the boys to come outside and play. Jen was willing but I couldn’t pry D away from Mathletics on the internet. Yes, still in school uniform. We head outside with the plan being plant the seeds in flower pots and pop them into our recently purchased greenhouse to start these seeds off properly.

Hungry To Happy, Richmond Meatballs 6

Britmums asked it’s parents bloggers to come up with a no fuss, quick meal using Richmond Meatballs. I love little challenges, but what really got my attention was the chance to win a Center Parcs holiday. I would love to go there, so here goes! My youngest is a fussy eater and one of the few things he will eat is meatballs. He loves the cheap tinned ones, but the phrase “recovered meat” makes me very uncomfortable cooking those for him. But when all he really wants is breakfast cereals, chocolate spread sarnies, or meatballs, what do you do! I do whatever I can to sneak vegetables in to his diet, and it is not always easy.

Chocolate Fudge Cake – Creative Cooking With Cadbury and #CBias 2

After my poor Blokey had made me cookies, whilst I merrily slept, he continues baking and cooking. Isn’t he good? This time, Cake! Yummy chocolatey birthday cake yumminess! Fudge Cake Click here to continue reading the recipe at Cadbury.co.uk Let’s be honest, look at the screen grab from Cadburys website. How awesome does this cake look. Hubby had the same reaction as me “Oooh I want to try that one!” Here are the ingredients, icing sugar, baking butter, flour, cocoa powder, and of course, the Cadbury Fudge bars which oddly are not in the picture. At this point stick the oven on at 180 degrees to warm up. (I would really recommend you read the recipe on Cadbury.co.uk which is linked underneath that lovely first image.) Ready to go. Weighing out the ingredients, on the scales is flour, baking powder and the cocoa. In the mixing bowl are a pair […]

Oat Cookies – Cadbury Dairy Milk Creative Cooking With #CBias

I have recently joined Collective Bias, or #CBias as it gets called on twitter. It is a shoppers programme where a few bloggers are chosen for each project, and then you have to plan and go shopping for a particular product, and photo it like crazy. I felt like a spy in Sainsburys. My Google+ photo album – my (not so) Top Secret mission! This mission was made for me, go and buy Diary Milk chocolate by Cadburys. Well it would be rude not to accept wouldn’t it? The mission was cookery, so I’ve had to bribe my partner in to cooking as I can burn salad me. Truly I am a bad cook, and he is great, so it’s the logical thing in this house that the Daddy cooks. First up Dairy Milk Cookies. Two more Yummy Cadbury baking blog posts follow this post shortly… stay tuned! Fudge Cake […]

Bloggers, I’ve got an idea 7

Whilst sat awake tonight an idea came to me #BlogTag Idea! I figured that a lot of other bloggers like getting a new audience, new readers. I know I like stumbling across blogs I’ve not seen before, and I also love it when other bloggers tweet links to my blog or share on G+ or other kind things like that. Well what if on a Wednesday evening we have a little twitter gathering. You tweet out the URL of a blog or two you like and @tag the blog owner and hash it #BlogTag – for example “have a peek at mummysrandomblog.blogspot.co.uk by @me #BlogTag because I like it / interesting posts / great reviews”Something like this, something thats your opinion though not just borrowing that persons blog bio.If someone #BlogTag’s you please tag them back in your own words. Whilst you are there why not pop a comment on […]

Spicy Scotch Eggs

As the owners of chickens sometimes we have more eggs than we can use. Yummy finished item…. When cooking dinner we boiled six eggs and left to cool. When kids were asleep we went back to the kitchen to get cooking. Pop the oven on at 190 centigrade to warm up as you prepare. Firstly you wrap your freshly peeled eggs in sausage meat and this makes giant meatballs. Roll these balls into flour, this will give the meatball a gripy surface. You need to dip and roll the meatball in a single beaten egg. We added chilli seeds to this to give it hidden flavour. Then immediately dump it in a bowl of breadcrumbs. Coat as fast as you can as will only stick to the wet egg. We made breadcrumbs by throwing a few slices of Hovis seedy loaf into a food processer. Lovely perfect crumbs with seeds […]

Christmas cake minus booze 2

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a little unusual. I am allergic to alcohol. I can’t consume it without being ill and large amounts or spirits could kill me. Excuse the image quality. My partner is going to make me a cake, will look and smell like Christmas but won’t hurt me. He can be so sweet sometimes. He has Googled a recipe then bought ingredients, we were going to buy a cake but the labels on shop crimbo cakes aren’t helpful. The non alcoholic wine was “just because”. He said hang on and ran back a few aisles and tried to sneak it into trolley. I know if alcohol is added during cooking I’ll feel ok, if fruit was soaked in booze as is traditional I will be rather unwell. If the booze is a flavouring such as in a cream filling, or in icing I would also be unwell. […]

Christmas is like Marmite

Christmas is like Marmite, but I can’t decide if I love or hate it. On the love side I’m in love with the almost romantic idea of Christmas, family being together. Children getting presents, adults eating posh food and falling asleep during the Queen’s speech… advent calendars and decorated trees. Does all sound lovely….But in reality, I suck at Crimbo. I’ve no idea how to make it feel like Christmas anymore. Everything has got so commercial, spend spend SPEND. Kids all bragging on end of term about whose parents spent the most, and how big their tree is, and that their uncle Steve always gives them £30 in his card. Where is the love? Personally I struggle and we try really hard to afford nice things for the boys. This year by “couponing” we got D something on the top of his Xmas wish list (ransom note). It’s a Lego train […]

Hoorah for all this rain 1

My garden is growing, alas the weeds are doing the best. We have rubbishy heavy clay soil, and despite binning the worst bits and replacing with homemade compost we still struggle to grow much more than dandelions. Each year I plant more bulbs, nothing exciting, daffodils etc. I also have the show drops and crocus bulbs I took from grandads garden after he died 7 years ago, I’ve never bought more of those, I like to know something of Gramps lives on. Every spring I will smile and remember gardening with my Gramps, and it encourages me to get a move on and get things growing. But after all this rain my strawberry plants that were limp and almost dead are now perky and standing up clear of the ground, I even spotted a few flowers on one. I love strawberries, really hope I get a good crop. We start […]

Even Rum and Raisin ice cream makes me ill

According to Australian doctors at Sydney city hospital I am allergic to alcohol. I agree with them, but can often eat things cooked with it, like fruit cakes with brandy soaked fruit, or spagetti bol made with a little red wine. I think its due to the cooking and evaporation. However rum and raisin ice cream gave me the nearly instant hangover effect, and all evening I thought I may vomit. I thought it was only rum Flavouring not actual rum! DOHH if you’re laughing reading this, stop that! Meanies. Note to self, just one more nice thing added to the list I can’t eat or drink.
