A weekend in Devon 2

I am writing this from a gorgeous en-suite bathroom at Lympscott cottage in Devon (thanks to HolidayCottages.co.uk),  it’s a lovely bathroom but I’d rather be asleep in bed given its now 2am. I’m sat on the floor willing my stomach to calm the heck down. It’s been a great day, I gatecrashed a swim the channel challenge at Bude sea pool on Summerleaze beach,  I’ve been for a 3 mile walk around a lake and gone to a quaint pub for dinner. Sadly I ate cheese at lunchtime,  I thought I’d be alright but nope. During the treasure hunt lake walk my belly started to swell up to pregnant proportions and the pain built up. I’ve been cranky and a bit moany,  I now feel a bit guilty. Sitting here, knowing three other people can hear me being unwell, I am praying they are asleep. I was thinking of wandering to […]

Camping – take 2 1

After the River Dart fuss and mass eviction we managed to find somewhere. We are now many miles away in Europa Park at Woolacombe bay. We are on the side of a steep hill but the camping areas have been levelled off. This place has a dog friendly bar restaurant, showers and all the basics plus a swimming pool with a sauna. It even has its own petrol station and Spar shop.

Last minute romantic getaways 2

At this time of year I am sure some of my readers are hoping to be whisked away by their other half. Or maybe you are the one doing the planning? Nothing beats a bit of alone time, perhaps cream teas and costal walks, or gyms and spas, maybe even sight-seeing? I’ve been thinking about places I would love to be taken to, whether for Valentines day or not, but I would love a relaxing child free break with my Blokey to be honest. The areas of the country we have spent a lot of time in over the years are Yorkshire, Devon and Cornwall, and of course Gloucestershire where I now live. Yorkshire If you like “Up North” then Scarborough is ace, I am biased though, as I have a few happy memories from my Grandparents living around there. Ox Pasture hall is a lovely looking cottage-like country house, with ivy growing up […]

Oxfam Christmas Toy Range 2

Jen and D received a lovely retro gift in the post thanks to Oxfam. It is a boxed set of glass “days-gone-by” marbles, although marbles aren’t modern, and unlikely to appeal to the 3DS generation my lads like them. On our recent holiday to Devon Jen wanted to buy marbles from every little gift shop we went near. As we were camping we refused to buy any, as we knew if they were lost camping in the woods there would be many tears and sniffling. When these marbles came Jen was very pleased, “Ooooooh these are them things I wanted to buy in Devon Mum!” Although we’ve had these in the house for over a week life gets in the way sometimes, parents evenings, dog adoptions, play dates with little friends, and we’ve just got around to playing with them – sorry Oxfam.   Like me you might have been unaware […]

Disney Planes Soundtrack Review 1

Little Jen was pleased to be asked to listen to the Disney’s Planes movie sound track. He adores Disney Cars, and was really excited before the release of Disney Planes. It was due to start showing in cinemas whilst we were on holiday camping in Devon, so he INSISTED we took 3D glasses with us. We actually booked it online from a tent, that’s a new experience. He loved it, he was counting down the days until it was showing and then during the end credits he said “Sooooo when are we getting the DVD mum?” but I couldn’t give him a date to countdown to this time! Planes is about Dusty, a crop-dusting plane. He dreams of being a racing plane, like a farmers boy dreaming of being a F1 driver. He dreams of competing in a famous aerial race. The problem? He is hopelessly afraid of heights. With […]

Mini Adventures 11

This week I’m re-taking my driving test, having failed again just before the camping trip to Devon. I lost it in a 5 to 10 second window – I stalled on a major roundabout, had a miniture panic attack and I think it was 5 attempts before I’d restarted – by which time I was crying. Instant fail right there, bugger! I knew it was but after this we kept driving, and I had just 4 “minors” in total, and one of them was “gears” which related to the roundabout incident too, as I couldn’t restart it and hadn’t checked which gear – was second still. Seriously if I’d got first gear, I wouldn’t have stalled, then panicked, then cried, then failed! One mistake, a simple stall and I panic, I hate the “sitting duck” feeling of being on a dangerous bit, a junction, a roundabout, traffic lights, that feeling […]

Noisy Neighbours

It is 4am and I have just woken up in the rent, I’ve got myself an irritating cold and sore throat. Anyways, enough of that. 4 am, I’d expect it to be quieter than it is. In the forest next to us, I can hear the river flowing and splashing, and something is walking about slowly in the woods, sneaking but breaking twigs, rustling through bushes, ferns and brambles. I’m thinking it might be a fox, sniffling and sneaking about? The loudest noise, after Blokey’s snoring and the river is the owl. Since we pitched up tent here at the River Dart country park the owl has made herself known. From shortly after nightfall she starts calling, twit twoooo, twit twoooo. I thought she might stop, but apparently not, she’s still awake now and going for it! There is also some kind of bird of prey out there. It’s almost […]

Happy Campers 3

The last few days we have been camping in Devon, hence the silence from myself on social media. I get ordinary phone signal, but 3G has gone on holiday round these parts. We are staying on the River Dart country park. It is nice, we are pitched under the overhang of a sycamore tree, all around us is more family tents.
