Today this happened. My neighbour wrote on Facebook earlier “young guinea pig, free to good home”. For a little while I’ve been considering getting a pal for Patch rabbit. Patch is mega old, about 10 years old. According to the posters in the pet shops rabbits live until about 6 years old, erm? Anyhow Patch hates other rabbits, I have introduced him to seven other rabbits over the years, he hated all of them but he tolerated our elderly guinea pig, Dotty, who passed away a while ago now.
A year and a bit ago I wrote welcome Dotty. I loved my ugly, smelly, noisy, deformed little guinea pig. He was special, his personality was hard to ignore. Just over a year ago I went to a pet shop just to buy bunny food and left with Dotty. He choose us, made it clear we were his people, I insisted on taking him home, the staff had to check with management as he wasn’t officially “ready for release” to be adopted… Something like that. So I spoke to the managers and said Dotty was calling to me, he had picked me, and I was willing to love Dotty and I had a spare hutch. I wouldn’t have taken no as an answer in honesty! And I don’t even like guinea pigs. He was very different. Were were told Dotty was a girl but I figured that was wrong shortly […]
I have been asked to review Beverly Hills Formula Perfect White toothpaste in standard and sensitive. I was pleased to get an email offering me samples of this as I’m a coffee addict and have sensitive teeth. I’m the perfect guinea pig for this actually. Then it dawned on me – how on earth do I photograph me brushing my own teeth? Why would anyone want to see my teeth? Here is an unflattering action shot of my teeth. The sensitive version is white opaque with blue dots, and the standard is translucent pale blue with blue dots. They both taste ok. Often specialist toothpastes that claim to do more than one thing taste awful in my opinion. What can I say, I’m fussy. But Beverly Hills Formula passes my taste test. I have only been using this a few days, and its only flipping working! Having tried many “sensitive […]
Thanks to my adorably cute yet really naughty young rabbits I’ve just had to do a bodge job in the garden and break up a rabbit fight in the dark. I’m sure my neighbours are unimpressed with you as well you fluffy little monsters.
Hiya, if you found me because you are attending Brit Mums and are having a nosey around blogs of other attendees, then welcome to my blog! I’m Julie (Obviously, sorry) and I live in Gloucester. I have two children, both boys, D and Jen. I adore my sons, but I struggle with them. I do not hide that I have mental health issues – if I smile at you and make eye contact often but don’t speak that means I want to talk, to say “Hiya I’m Julie” but I’m too self-concious, too shy, afraid you won’t know me, and then I’ll be embarrassed even more. Once I get past that, I think I’m chatty, friendly and a good listener. Things I like include cake, coffee, chocolate, cups of tea, and biccies. And this is why I’m trying hard to lose weight now before I skydive for Matilda. Not […]
We came back from Hendra today, a few hours on the motorway. I kept falling asleep in the car on the way back so it didn’t seem such a long journey this time as it did travelling down there. Monday to Friday just doesn’t seem long enough. I don’t usually like holiday and caravan parks but I’m tempted to book to go back there soon. Great customer service from almost everyone and Emma the entertainments manager is just awesome. Me and the blokey even got on the stage for some of the game shows. Pretty silly stuff! My blokey is in the check shirt The park’s mascot is a huge hippo called Henry. Henry’s picture is all over the park and Jen adored him.We had to buy Jen a Henry teddy, £6 so much cheaper than Butlins Billy bear, and it’s a reasonable size too. Each morning a land train […]
Zoflora have seen me a bottle of their Spring Time fragranced concentrated disinfectant 3 in 1 action. This comes in a small carton with a little bottle in, the thing is you make up the solution with water yourself at home, so this little bottle makes nearly 5 litres of cleaning fluid, its much easier to carry a small package home than a few litres of ready mixed cleaners. Image from Zoflora.co.uk The instructions say you mix it at 1 to 40 ratio in water, so grab yourself a 1 litre spray bottle (my spray bottle below was one I had in the garage, and had only ever been used with plain tap water to water house plants). Add in 25 ml of Zoflora (approx a fifth of the bottle) then top it all the way up to 1 litre with water, if my maths is correct this is 1 […]
Over the years I have always tried to avoid animal testing, not just because I keep a pet bunny rabbit, but because I believe hurting animals like this is wrong. Something readers to this blog won’t know is as a teenager I used to go door-to-door in my village in Cornwall with petitions. I don’t think I was popular for doing this, Door knocking with a “ban fox hunting” petition in a very rural place that had its own hunt meet. Picture credit, LUSH It wasn’t just foxes I tried to help, was pretty much any animal campaign by Greenpeace, WWF, The RSPCA or PETA. Save the whales, no to bunny testing, free range not battery hens… that sort of thing. I still very much agree with the anti cruelty message, but I am no longer a vegetarian. I do however prefer traceable meats from proper butchers and farmers, not […]
Poor old Dotty was pretty stinky so I’ve just had to wash him.He is an elderly rescued guinea pig, and unfortunately has some old boy habits. He regularly wets himself in his sleep, hence the shocking smell. He also has badly twisted feet meaning attempts at cutting his claws always end with him very stressed and me feeling guilty for hurting him. Just keep reminding myself his feet were broken and bent when I homed him, and I’m only cutting his nails to help him walk without being in pain. And to do this I have to make him upset and uncomfortable. Right now the old lad is sat on my lap, wrapped in a towel and almost asleep. Looking much nicer, and smelling of apples with claws a teeny bit shorter. I’ve added this to a nice blog hop….
I saw via Twitter a blogger challenge to create a dream stocking of £200 for your pets. The main rule is any items from the site, but not more than £200, I’ve managed to get just pence under that target. The details are here on GJW Titmuss website. I think its a really generous competition, and I’m tempted by some of the items on the website. Below I have copied my basket. We have 4 pets. Dotty, a very elderly rescued Guinea pig, Patch the rabbit, and Tikka and Fajita our young hens. Tikka and Fajita are in a brand new home, unlike Patch and Dotty. Dotty lives in an old and slightly damaged indoor cage in my living room, he was outside for a short while but he is very much in need of company and was distressed outside. He would love a new home I’m sure, I have […]
You might remember about a month ago i adopted an adorable old girl guinea pig, Dotty. Well as she settled in her behavior became a bit territorial so I started to doubt little Dotty’s gender… Then hubby made a comment about it too. So I checked a few pet websites and had to have a very close look at Dotty to verify, but Dotty is definitely a lad. Good thing we didn’t have another piggy at home really! I advise anyone getting a guinea pig from a friend or pet shop to googling for information on the differences between male and female guinea pigs or cavies as the Americans seem to refer to them. The problem with piggies of both sexes is their bits are concealed and both have nipples too so both appear female on first inspection. In case you were wondering HE is doing fine, and here he […]
On Saturday we went into the pet shop just to buy rabbit food. There was a kids hugging session with a “small animal” due in a few mins time, so my boys loitered. Out came an old guinea pig called Dotty. She was up for adoption, and I heard the shop lady mention no body wanted her. She has a problem with her eyes, but I don’t care. It apparently will mean her eyes are permanently damaged, but their vets say nothing can be done now, was caused by previous owners, although I wasn’t told how. This means she’s cute and ugly at the same time. Four years old is oldddd for a guinea pig though, I think the average life span for a pet piggy is five years old. Her personality is what got mine and the boys attention. She’s daft, friendly and lovely. She chatters away, but not […]
