How to make your house cosy for winter 1

With less than one week until winter officially arrives, most people will be starting to prepare themselves for the bracing cold conditions that are likely to hit the United Kingdom. Whether that means gritting their driveways or simply wearing an extra layer of clothing, British people are extremely thorough when it comes to preparing themselves against the cold and many will also take extreme lengths to completely adapt their houses to ensure maximum comfort away from the freezing weather outside. Here are a few ways how you can make your home incredibly cosy during the winter period. Put Christmas decorations up There’s nothing more warm and welcoming than Christmas decorations. With less than one month until the big day, it’s now acceptable to get the tree out of the loft and stick tinsel all around the ornaments. Christmas decorations add a positive, happy feel to the family home and can […]

Keep your pet warm this Winter 2

It should come as no surprise to regular readers of this blog that I adore my dog. Well Freya Woof hates the cold, and being a Saluki she really is not built to cope with the cold weather. She certainly lets us know when she is cold too, dragging her bed so it’s in front of the newly fitted fireplace or burying herself underneath Jen’s duvet with her head on a teddy. She is such a big baby. Well there are things you can do to help out chilly hounds. Coats and jumpers are the easiest way, but not all dogs like them. You could always put a hot water bottle under your hounds bed, blanket or basket but these don’t stay warm very long. Don’t fret, PetShopBowl has you covered. They sell something called Snugglesafe* which is good for bunnies, cats, dogs and lots of other pets – Microwave it […]

Robot Wars Live 5

Oh Yes, Robot Wars is back, sadly not yet on TV. Who knows though, we all just need to make a bit more fuss about it so the TV companies notice it’s still going. I found out about Robot Wars in my local town just by chance. I needed a wee, oh the glamour, at least you know I write the truth, so I popped in to the local shopping centre as out town no longer has proper public loos.   I ran past this on the way to the “ladies room” and I could hardly believe my eyes. Behind Major Damage you might notice the delightful little retro Matilda, the house-bot. Ahhh memories of Craig Charles on the telly box getting super excited. (Mr CC isn’t part of the team still, but the men that replace him have huge passion.) I HAD to buy tickets. What I didn’t read […]

30 ways to save £1 4

I saw +Jax from Liveotherwise blog about this great competition from Money supermarket and knew I had to enter. It’s called 30 ways to save £1, and the great thing about this competition isn’t the huge prize money, it is that they will give you £1 per tip, if you publish your own post on this topic before 17th of May, so what are you waiting for?   Pounds, Quid, gold pieces, dosh!    The first tip has to be, enter this competition yourself as soon as you have read this post! Always make sure you use the food with the shortest dates first. Throwing out a few items a week could cost you several pounds. Wash your laundry at 30 degrees when you can to save a little bit in electric bills. Try to save a little bit of gas and water (so dosh too) by shortening you shower by […]

Vroom Vroom 2

Ok, my last post was big news, a sky dive for charity, but this is big news for me too.   Custard and Jen pointing at his sunshade! Last night I booked (ok partner booked using my cards) my driving Theory Test. It’s in a couple of weeks time, then after booking that I did an online practice test, and I got 45/50 and the passing grade is 43 or higher. So I can pass, and I intend to pass first time. I’ve downloaded the Highway Code to my kindle, yes I know, it’s not the average bed time reading, but I want to know it all in case I get tricky questions on the day. My new instructor says I will pass, and he has no desire whatsoever to use the dual-controls with me. It is a nice feeling, I know I can, and I want my licence a […]

Its Raining, Its Pouring 2

At last, some sensible April weather. It has warmed up to a temperature where I’m no longer shivering. All day it’s been reasonably warm with anything between drizzle to heavy downpours. Occasionally actual sunshine was seen, great stuff. As a gardener I appreciate the wet weather, my rain water butts were almost empty and the beds were just dusty. Of course I’ve been watering my new trees but within an hour or so the top soil was dry as here we have not had rain in weeks. Today I wanted to get outside in my garden and plant my bulbs, but of course, it turned from very faint infrequent drizzle into real rain at the time I was going to get growing. Tomorrow, tomorrow I will turn over the top soil and bury those 70-ish bulbs I bought in Wilkinsons the other day. I’m still planning on having a mini fruit […]

Help our bees! 6

Hullo, If you don’t garden you might not realise, but common garden bees are vanishing. You might not know how important this is, and if you don’t then I whole heartedly suggest watching “Bee Movie” as although it’s a cartoon film it explains it perfectly. Without bees we are up the creek without a paddle. They aren’t all about honey, the main thing is pollination. Without them kindly moving pollen about very few flowers, vegetable plants or fruit trees would grow. Or they may grow leaves, but produce no flowers, no fruit, no seeds. Think about it, no seed to grind into flour, or wheat into pasta? What do we eat then? As bees are massively in decline in this country I thought I’d try to encourage readers to do something. You don’t need a real garden, if you have a lawn just bury spring flowering bulbs in the lawn. […]

Playing outdoors in the cold. 1

Last week Jen and I went to the park for a picnic… thing is I had promised him a trip to the big park (pittville park in Cheltenham) and as luck would have it it was freezing, about minus 4 degrees on my day off. Still, a promise had been made, it took 2 buses and over an hour but he had fun. We had ourselves a picnic in the park, sitting in the drivers cab of the toy train we had sausage rolls, frubes, fruit muffins and some fresh mushrooms (he eats those instead of fruit). Then we had a bit of a play, pushing on the swings and the usual sort of stuff. At the top of the park are a few large animal cages. We went to say hello to the bunnies, peacocks, chickens, budgies and chipmunks. Jen was keen on those “stripey squirrels”, then we went […]
