Upcycling a mirror 6

A while back now we went to the dump recycling site to take some wood and cardboard to recycle. I saw a big wood framed floor standing mirror, 5ft6″ big. No serious faults, just scratched varnish. I have honestly wanted one of these for years. What a waste. You can’t officially take things from the tip, its the recycling company or councils property once its left. I walked over to the gentleman working and said it was a waste can I rescue it? The reply was clever “that mirror Miss? I am sure it came from your car, put it back if you like?” and winked. He couldn’t say yes, officially, but he helped me put it back in the car boot. 😉

Since then its been in the garage, on a to-do-list in my head. Well today I am fixing it.

Sanding off the almost orange varnish.

Electric sanders are great, but when you’ve finished my word you arms feel funny! I don’t have a work bench, so its on top of Freya’s crate in the living room. Hey it does the job doesn’t it?

First lick of paint.

White gloss. It goes with anything and will look equally at home in my bathroom or bedroom. Plus this is a left over half can of paint in the garage, so nothing extra to pay out.

Drying time.

It is solid wood, joined properly, not MDF or plywood cheap furniture. I had a look round t’interweb and similar could cost over a hundred pounds. It took twenty minutes to sand and paint the first coat, then hours of waiting for it to dry. But waiting isn’t hard really.

When I’ve given it a second coat later its going in my bedroom, and I can see what I am wearing without standing on the arm of the sofa and leaning sideways to look into the mirror on our chimney.

This is not an ideal way to check an outfit!
