Last weekend I was lucky enough to get sent some Morrisons shopping vouchers and asked for my opinions on Morrisons prices, quality and the experience as a whole. Morrisons were extremely generous and sent hundreds of blogging parents shopping vouchers, so we could all give them a go, and look out for the “I’m Cheaper” logos.

The front of New Morrisons in Gloucester.
To be honest we normally shop elsewhere, but with a new store open in Gloucester this was the perfect excuse to go to M instead.
One of the perks of this place for us is it backs on to the railway tracks, Jen and Blokey love trains and Jen even saw a wild bunny rabbit through the fence. There is something about Morrisons being Northern that reminds me of holidays. Back in the good-old-days when my Nan and Gramps were alive and lived in Yorkshire we would shop in Morrisons and it was a novelty rather than a boring supermarket. It hasn’t lost that feel to me. And why does the floor look the same in ever Morrisons? This store has been open just a few months and yet the floor looks much older, that’s not a complaint, merely an observation.
We went for Barbeque foods, no list of course as I am mega disorganised. I almost never go shopping with a list, and this was no exception. We got rather a lot of meat, Blokey and Jen were being very carnivorous and Jen kept saying “Mum if its free shopping why can’t I have steak then?” Ok lad, fair point! We normally shop for cheap items and brands, and this was meant to be a treat after all, he got the steak. Yes, it was cheaper than elsewhere, but to me (an ex vegetarian) it was rather pricey, although Blokey said it was a fair price.
The butchers counter lad was very friendly and polite. He was giggling quietly at Jen’s polite demand for steak. We had beef steak, and gammon steak, and mince for homemade burgers, and flavoured sausages. So of course we needed bit and bobs to go alongside the meat, salad veggies, potato salad, fizzy pop (pop in bottles is a treat as we do SodaStream at home), and loads of other bits. Not all essential by any means, but some of it was very much the essentials such as milk, and lunch box foods for school. Ohhh, and I NEEDED the Eton mess ok?
We also bought Turbo on Blu Ray (not using the vouchers) and a pack of paint your own garden (gnome) snails – themed entertainment whilst food was being prepared to keep them busy, clever eh?
Poor Blokey got the rough deal, he was designated chef, and as I type this on our laptop I am making him write out the recipe on his iPad, which I’ll quote below.
We spent around £90 so paid the extra bit, but very happy to do so.
Homemade burger recipe.
Beef burgers:
(I took a quarter of the meat out to make Jen a plain burger as he wouldn’t like the spicy taste)
1 pound of mince beef
1 onion, finely chopped
1 table spoon of mixed green herbs
1 scotch bonnet chilli, diced including seeds
1 table spoon of tomato sauce
1 table spoon of whole grain mustard
Freshly ground black pepper and rock salt.
1 egg from our garden chickens, beaten
Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl except the egg. Use your hands to mix them together until the mince starts to stick together. Add the beaten egg, mix with hands again to combine.
Take a quarter of the mixture and form into a ball. Push down slightly to make a patty. Repeat until all mixture used. Put on a plate and into the fridge for 30 mins to an hour to firm up.
Heat the BBQ and cook for 5 to 6 minutes on each side over a medium heat for a medium burger. Allow longer if you want them well done. Allow to rest for 2 to 3 minutes after cooking. Place in a bun with cheese and condiments of choice.
Homemade chocolate cheesecake. Its soooooo bad for you but its Good.
Chocolate Cheesecake.
150 grams of digestive biscuits
45 grams of butter
110 grams of caster sugar
120ml whipping cream
150 grams of dark chocolate
2 tablespoons of cocoa powder
200 grams mascarpone cheese
Crush the digestive biscuits. Mix in 1 table spoon of the caster sugar.
Melt their butter in a pan. Add the digestive and sugar mix. Push into the base of an 18cm wide spring form tin. Put in the fridge to set whilst the topping is made.
Melt the chocolate over water and allow to cool. Meanwhile, whip the cream until soft peaks form. Add the cocoa powder and melted chocolate and mix well.
In another bowl, beat together the cream cheese and remaining sugar. This will take a few minutes else it will have a grainy texture. When ready fold into the cream mixture and mix well.
Spread over the biscuit base. Chill in the fridge for at least an hour to let the topping set.
Can be garnished with red berries if desired. Serves 8 (or double servings for 4!)
Jen was pretty pleased with that snail, and as a twin pack was £3 I think that was the best thing we got that we didn’t really need. Look how proudly he is showing his big brother D what he did. Poor Freya though is sulky as I was not sharing my lunch.
Dear Morrisons, We’ll be back! if you want more opinions from other #MorrisonsMum’s and #MorrisonsDad’s there are hundreds linked up on this BritMums blog post. They really were mega generous!
Disclosure: I was given £80 in vouchers to try out Morrisons and write my honest unbiased opinions. All words are my own, except Blokey’s bit in the quote box, and the photos are by Myself or Blokey.
