Today was a really warm day – 22°c. It is not what you expect on Halloween really, I am used to freezing my behind off trick or treating. Today was lovely though. There was a Halloween themed family fun day up the hill so I took the boys and the woofer out for a drive. We had a go at some crafts first. The boys made badges and carved pumpkins. The boys had fun with the pumpkins, but made me do the gross bit of hollowing out the stringy bits and seeds. It feels so slimey and nasty.

As I am sure you know it’s Halloween this week. The shops are pushing sugar loaded sweets, and I didn’t want to go there. Why are the treats all confectionary, why no savoury snacks? I wanted tiny bags of cheesy biscuits but there was only the most expensive left, so I left those. What did I buy then? A packet of mixed wrapped sweets, a packet of boxed raisins, a packet of boxed yogurt coated strawberry bits and a bag of loose sprouts. Yes sprouts. When the kids grab a handful they will getting dried fruit – natures own sweets, and possibly a sprout. I want there to be a trick involved. I will peel the outer leaves to tidy them up a bit.

This week I made Father’s day cards using photos printed from mobile phone and blank cards from Poundland. The scrap paper bits were from there too, so 4 cards cost me about £3.50 which I think isn’t bad. Have you done anything special for your Dad or Father in law?

When I saw that La Jewellery wanted to work with eco-conscious bloggers to run a competition for their readers I hopped jumped at the chance. La Jewellery make lovely items with good ethics and a consideration for the environment. What’s not to like?! Technically this lovely window display is full of hares, but I’m thinking bunnies – Easter Bunnies, and I am hoping the winner replies in two shakes of a rabbit’s tail (quick) so that the lovely prize will pop through your letter box before Easter. Lets face it, lovely jewellery is going to last longer than a chocolate egg or bunny.

I am not keen on overly commercial, over priced cards, or flowers. Instead I am making Blokey a gift. Its no secret that I can’t cook, in fact I go to basic cookery lessons. So I am making chocolates. I have some super strong Co-op fairtrade 85% cocoa dark chocolate, and some Cadbury DM fruit and nut. They are like the opposites, the Co-op being a coniseurs type, where you feel sick if you eat too much as its so rich. The DM is like comfort, its not too posh, not to cheap and its easy to eat all of it. I figure a mixture of these makes perfection. Like sweetness and bitterness, too posh versus normal.

At this time of year I am sure some of my readers are hoping to be whisked away by their other half. Or maybe you are the one doing the planning? Nothing beats a bit of alone time, perhaps cream teas and costal walks, or gyms and spas, maybe even sight-seeing? I’ve been thinking about places I would love to be taken to, whether for Valentines day or not, but I would love a relaxing child free break with my Blokey to be honest. The areas of the country we have spent a lot of time in over the years are Yorkshire, Devon and Cornwall, and of course Gloucestershire where I now live. Yorkshire If you like “Up North” then Scarborough is ace, I am biased though, as I have a few happy memories from my Grandparents living around there. Romantic doesn’t have to be a silly over-priced token gift. To me its the little things that are most romantic. Things like coffee and breakfast in bed, or when Blokey picks up on tiny things I say. As regular blog readers will know, I’ve had a troubled past. For me the sweetest thing ever was when we were talking about 80’s toys as we are the same age. I said how I used to collect Pound Puppies and Pound Purries but I had to leave them when I ran away, and I regretted that. Well I wasn’t dropping hints, I was not asking nor expecting him to find me any PP’s. But he went on ebay when I was asleep and bought a Pound Puppy mummy dog. Homemade Christmas Gift – Tea for Two

If you want a cheap but thoughtful Christmas present then I’ve an idea for you. We made homemade biscuits from one of the millions of recipes easily found online and displayed them in a cute way. Firstly we make biscuit dough and roll it out to about half a centimeter thick and cut it into various sizes of stars using cutters. When these have cooked and cooled slightly arrange them biggest at the bottom, sticking the stars together with icing as you go.
