Today this happened.
My neighbour wrote on Facebook earlier “young guinea pig, free to good home”. For a little while I’ve been considering getting a pal for Patch rabbit. Patch is mega old, about 10 years old. According to the posters in the pet shops rabbits live until about 6 years old, erm?
Anyhow Patch hates other rabbits, I have introduced him to seven other rabbits over the years, he hated all of them but he tolerated our elderly guinea pig, Dotty, who passed away a while ago now.
The advice these days is bunnies and pigs shouldn’t be hutch buddies, but when you’ve an elderly bunny like Patch who hates his own kind why not rehome a piggy? After an hour of hugs with myself and the kids I took Harry outside to meet Patch. He didn’t growl or stamp, but he was a bit frosty towards Harry at first.
Now when I check on them both Harry runs and hides behind Patch! Although he is not approaching Harry, for him this is friendly. A kind of ignorance rather than aggression, it is lovely to see from a usually hostile bunny.
Here are a couple of close ups, my word he’s a fidget when you try to photo him. But I loves him already.
So now that is 8 pets, in my defence 7 are small. 😉
How many pets do you have?

He is a cutie!! I hope they get on ok, I have to admit I was a little worried when you said that they were living together but I should have known you were all over it! You do know that they need different food don’t you? Guinea Pigs can’t synthesis their own Vitamin C and so you need to make sure their diet is rich in this. Again I am assuming you already know, but would rather share just in case – hope that’s ok?! x
Yup, I know. But being reminded is cool too, I might not have known. Patch is an unusual bunny, hates human males, and all bunnies even a girl bunny that was his breed.
I just hate the though he’s going to die alone in the night. Harry and Patch seem well suited, no issues yet. My lad said “you know rabbits and guinea pigs squeak different languages don’t you, how’s that going to help Patch?” – Good point but people and bunnies don’t speak the same lingo, yet we can get along. 🙂
I knew you would but would rather be safe than sorry as they say (please don’t kick me off your blog for appearing to be a know it all pain in the ass!) I hope they are still getting along and I love the ‘different lingo but all get along’!!
I have a lot of cats. I went from fish to cats bypassing small animals completely.
Omg, how cute are these two? Your rabbit looks so adorable, love the white and black patches on him. Looks like both of them are getting along just fine.

Wow, He looks huge. Haha. How cute! I hope Harry is very happy with you & the fam.
He is so cute, hope he settles in well
So far so good. Last night I saw him using the water bottle and until then he hadn’t as the living room area seemed to belong to patch, and the bedroom to Harry. But now they are sharing.
awwww what a cute little guinea pig. i had two of them when i was growing up which I adopted from a girl at school when she was moving to Brighton and Rosie and Pudding were not part of the move away! They were such sweet little pets.

You have a cute new addition. Thank you for sharing.
