Gardening

Almost Late for School 1

Today has been one of those bad days, things getting on my nerves, some bad news and money worries. On the way to school this morning it was dry as I walked out of the front door but chucking it down by the time I’d got my cycle from the garage. I pedal fast with Jen but the rain was right in our faces, and so was the wind. Then it stopped once I got him inside the classroom! Typical eh?Then I came home and did some laundry. All seemed OK until I took the items out of the washer. Everything had brown powdery marks on them like someone had washed it in cocoa powder. I’ve no idea why this keeps happening every few washes recently. Then I tried to use the toaster, but it failed. Was plugged in and turned on, put the bread in and pushed button, nothing! […]

Hoorah for all this rain 1

My garden is growing, alas the weeds are doing the best. We have rubbishy heavy clay soil, and despite binning the worst bits and replacing with homemade compost we still struggle to grow much more than dandelions. Each year I plant more bulbs, nothing exciting, daffodils etc. I also have the show drops and crocus bulbs I took from grandads garden after he died 7 years ago, I’ve never bought more of those, I like to know something of Gramps lives on. Every spring I will smile and remember gardening with my Gramps, and it encourages me to get a move on and get things growing. But after all this rain my strawberry plants that were limp and almost dead are now perky and standing up clear of the ground, I even spotted a few flowers on one. I love strawberries, really hope I get a good crop. We start […]

Spring is here, let the gardening commence

Yesterday and today I’ve been gardening, much to the disgust of my rabbit Patch, as he knows that means he can’t wander wherever he wants in the garden any more. It’s run only or supervising him from now until end of veggie season. I’ve dug over the veg bed, chopped a few stray branches on the redcurrant bush and turned the compost bins at the top. I’ve planted out some seeds for French beans and runner beans, peas, carrots and cabbages. Also tied up some branches on the cherry tree as they were sticking out at eye level.

Gardening by storms

As I’m sure you all know UK is getting the tail end of a hurricane that’s misnavigated and come to UK, not usa. Unfortunately this wind took down a lot of my veggies. My Apple tree was sideways, herbs squished, but the tomatoes were worst. Tall plants ripped from sticks, and little red and Orange toms all over the path. So we were forced to do an impromptu harvest. This was 3 mixing bowls full. 1 bowl full was ripe, the majority are green though. Fortunely Hubby is a good cook and also does a mean green tom chuteney. Time to start saving old jam jars, sweet and sour jars etc. If anyone’s interested I might copy his chuteney reciepe for you to read. After all, Xmas is coming and this is pretty festive!

Not a bad day on the whole

Started off with being woken up too early by my other half… not so good! Then littlest said the spots on his legs were itching so a phone call to the doctors was in order. As normal they didn’t really know, but I felt I was being judged….. he has had spots on his leg about a week, but he’s been perfectly healthy except this and it wasn’t bothering him. I get similar myself, it comes and goes without real explanation. Maybe I was just feeling sensitive as last time I saw this doctor it was when he had a head injury.Do other patents feel almost threatened by “that look” from professionals?? Anyways, after this we cycled back via the park, saw some birds and played on slides, swings and lots of variations on roundabouts. Eldest felt so dizzy he nearly puked! Tmi? After cycling back home we got lunch […]

Saturday morning

Well here I am, blogging from my bed! The kids have invaded, cartoons on loudly and hogging my bed but they aren’t fighting yet. Today Hubby has gone to work, despite the common misconception some school staff have to work at silly times, how lovely a term time and school hours only job would be!!! What should I do today, its sunny out but I’m feeling sleepy and a bit “can’t be bothered” but of course I’ll have to move soon as the boys will require food. Eldest is perfectly able but won’t eat unless nagged or put under his nose, I reckon he’s being bullied but he denies it. I might do gardening again as our vegetable patch is more a weeds patch! Never ending battle there, its like our soil is loaded with weed seeds. Can’t get rid of them, advice welcomed! I’ll try to photo them later […]
